LABORATORY PROCEDURES FOR MICROORGANISMS Appendix M/1998/1.06 Appendix 4 UNPACKING OF CULTURES RECEIVED FOR DEPOSIT For cultures arriving for deposit a particular room or at least a particular area should be designated in the collection. A responsible person(s) for unpacking biological specimens received from outside the collection should be named. Staff members responsible for unpacking of biological specimens should be aware of the potential hazard involved. At least packages containing unknown cultures or cultures of strains classified with (Risk) Group/Class 2 or higher should be unpacked in a laminar air-flow cabinet. Broken or leaking containers should be handled with great care. Disinfections should be always available. Named cultures belonging to risk groups not allowed to handle by the collection should be immediately placed in an autoclave and heat sterilized.
