LABORATORY PROCEDURES FOR MICROORGANISMS

REFERENCE NO.: M/1999/1.00

TITLE: INTRODUCTION TO CABRI

 CABRI – Common Access to Biotechnology Resources and Information – is an association of qualified European Culture Collections holding different organism types, genetic materials and other "biologicals".

CABRI links the individual centres’ catalogue databases allowing the user world-wide to access these catalogues simultaneously and to order the required biological resources.

CABRI guarantees the customer that he will be provided with a high quality product. Therefore, the resource centres involved in the CABRI-project have developed basic quality management standards. These standards are laid down in CABRI manuals and – for micro-organisms - are based on the generally accepted "Guidelines for the Establishment and Operation of Collections of Cultures of Microorganisms" published by the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) in 1999 (M/1999/1.00 Appendix 1). They cover procedures that as far as possible will guarantee

· the adherence to international, European or national regulations as well as to safety standards in the field of biotechnology;

· the authenticity of biological materials;

· the purity of cultures or absence of contaminants;

· the processing of cultures including their quality control;

· the accuracy of data collected and supplied;

· punctuality and delivery standards.

Furthermore, to be recognised as a CABRI-member, each resource centre should develop its own quality management protocols which they have to follow. However, these protocols have to agree with the basic CABRI-guidelines. For such accreditation, a CABRI-committee will be installed.
